Roseville, Ontario.
To the dissapointment of some Waterloo residents, city council voted against residents keeping backyard chickens at their meeting last night. The issue was raised back in August 2008 when the 'Waterloo Hen Association' approached council with a bylaw proposal in favour of the hens. Until then, there were no rules for or against egg-laying in the city limits.
Waterloo was named one of the top 7 intelligent cities in the world in 2006, but this narrow-minded decision, based on fears of unwanted pests and odours, has left the community leaders with egg on their face in the opinion of some.
To be fair...the vote was lost after 4 councillors were in favour, while 4 were against...but a tie means that the motion is lost.
People who already have chickens will be allowed to keep them.
