Hello - I just noticed my rooster has one eye that is watering and teary. And he is blinking it often. HIs other eye is fine and he is alert and seems normal otherwise. I'm in upstate NY. Can you recommend anything to treat this? Or have any idea what it could be? Thank you.

Do you see any bubbles in his eye? A watery eye can be a first sign of a respiratory infection or disease. Bubbles can be a sign of mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) But ammonia odor from droppings, poor air circulation in a coop, or some other irritant might be responsible. Listen for rattly breathing, look for nasal drainage, sneezing or cough. Terramycin eye ointment can be found at most feed stores by asking the clerk, and if it gets sticky, you can clean it with saline eye wash from the pharmacy. Bausch and Lomb or a generic brand is fine.

Thank you so much. No bubbles. I saw that his affected eye looked fine this morning so maybe it was just that something got in it. It seems to have resolved itself but I will keep observing him closely. Thanks again.
