I can't tell you what might be wrong with your one chick, but, antibiotics can cause diarrhea in otherwise healthy animals. It kills off the "good" bacteria needed for digestion. Yogurt will help to get their systems back to normal. Without knowing what is wrong with your sick chick, I can't recommend one way or the other if you should stop giving the healthy chicks the tetracycline.

Anytime you give antibiotics to your chickens, pets, or even when people take them, it's a great idea to also take a probiotic or eat yogurt with active cultures either one hour prior or 2 hours afterward.
This restores the intestinal bacteria that's needed so they don't get diarrhea. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria and the good bacteria that's in the intestines is needed to help in the digestive process and keep the immune system strong.
A lot of times when you give antibiotics the good bacteria is also destroyed and they will get diarrhea and then get weak or dehydrated and their immune systems compromised.

sorry azelgin! We must've been replying at the same time..didn't mean to repeat what you just said.

Hey, I'm glad you backed me up on this. Sometimes I wonder if I even know what I'm talking about.

I got my first batch of chicks last week, and within two days of getting them, 3 or 6 had watery stool. They were in a smaller box for brooding, so I moved them to a nice big box (about 2'x 3.5') and they are so much happier and the loose poops stopped with all but one of them. I think they may be a bit warm, so I'm going to raise the light today and see if that doesn't help too.

I added some whey to my chicks' water to help with healthy bacteria. (whey is a by product of making yogurt, it contains the same beneficial bacteria in live-active yogurt). Our feed store only had the medicated chick feed so I was really stuck without choice.

is flavred yogurt ok? that is what i have. and it's organic.
