My hen (Japanese bantam) has been leaving weird poops. First one was two days ago, nothing out of the ordinary yesterday, now today again. They're watery with slightly solid bits in it (pic below).

Here's a list of my observations:
  • other than the poops, she seems to be acting fine
  • as stated, she pooped fine yesterday so it seems like not all her poops are this watery
  • she has free access to the garden
    • it's been very rainy recently, maybe she's found and eaten lots of worms and slugs? She LOVES worms
  • she drinks a lot, more than our rooster, but always has so this isn't something new
  • she recently started laying again, have had an egg every day for the past couple days
  • so far I've only found poops like these on the patio, not inside their shed, hard to tell if there's any in the grass
  • she ate her pellets fine yesterday, haven't seen her eat any today but she's been picking in the grass, also haven't been able to watch her a lot today
  • I did find something in one dropping, I think it was a piece of intestinal lining but I'm not sure. It was way more pink than worms usually seem to be, and it seemed to be kind of segmented, but not in the way that tapeworms are. I couldn't get a picture of it because before I had the chance, she came over and ate it of course
Things I'm planning to check out when I get them inside tonight:
  • her weight
  • she seemed to be picking/preening around her vent area a lot, as far as I could see nothing out of the ordinary except a little poop stuck on her feathers but I'll take a closer look at that
I'll probably be going to the vet with her anyway just for my own peace of mind, but any help/advice/guesses as to what caused this would be appreciated!

How is your hen doing? Did you take her to the vet?
I completely forgot to update this but I called the vet and she suggested waiting another day, seeing if she had any more watery poops and if she did, coming in with a sample. Fortunately, no more watery poops since I posted this!

I did find something else though. What I thought were little poop nuggets under her vent were in fact nits, turns out she has lice. I hadn't noticed the changes in her behaviour, but after treating her a first time she already seems more energetic and less scruffy!

Thank you for updating, I have a hen who started watery poops after a drainage for ascitite. I don't know if they are related, but it has been more than 10 days and she shoots water from her bum like an explosive diarrhea.

Looking around for more info :(

My girl is having these poops! I really want to know how to make it go back to normal. Eggs are normal, personality is normal.

hi, from advice I have received (in a different thread) the suggestion is to try to give her a probiotic such as yogourt. (they recommended greek yogourt, but I don't know if it matters). Also, they asked if there had been any changes to her diet recently (it might be a short-term response to a change in food, while she adapts).

good luck, feel free to message me if I can be of any help
