My name is Deborah. I'm in my second year of raising chickens. One of our hens from last year brooded us 9 chicks this spring with the awesome ratio of 7 hens to 2 roosters. We have mostly buff Orpingtons and a few Dorkings. We mostly just raise chickens for our own eggs. I live outside Austin, TX. Pleased to meet you all.
 
Welcome to BYC, Deborah. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas. You have some good breeds. I love the friendly and gentle temperament of the Buff Orpingtons and have some in my own flock. You might want to consider either removing one of the roosters or else getting some more hens or you may find you have some rooster problems down the line. The recommended ratio of hens to roosters is 10 hens for every 1 rooster as too many roosters can be very hard on your hens physically; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially seriously injuring them. Thanks for the welcome. As all of this Spring's chicks have the same father we have been considering trading the cockerels for an outside rooster. Their sire got taken by a predator shortly before they hatched. We have something, we are not sure what, that has taken a few of our hens and the rooster. Usually while we were away from home and our barn sitters didn't make sure that all the chickens were in the coops before locking them in at night. But I digress... Thanks again.
