My name is Debi, I live in NE Florida and will be getting a few hens soon for eggs, pest control, scrap food consumption, and (more than likely) pets. I'm 53 and haven't had chickens since I was a kid so I may as well have no experience whatsoever. I do have a lot of experience with animals, having worked as a veterinary technician for over twenty years. I look forward to learning the best way to keep my chickens happy and healthy.

Hi Debi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Don’t worry, you’ll so get back in the groove of keeping chickens :)

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Hello, Debi, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do you have your coop ready and a breed or breeds picked out?

Hi DobieLover, thanks for the welcome!

My dad is orchestrating this new venture and we got a chain-link dog kennel that was sitting idle in someone's back yard as a beginning to the new coop, and materials purchased, but that's the only progress so far. I plan on getting Rhode Island Red hens, but I'm open to others since I enjoy chickens and have friends with bigger mixed flocks. Keeping a rooster is still debatable. We have just under two acres so they'll have plenty of room to roam, supervised, since we also have plenty of aerial predators around here, not to mention roaming cats, the neighbor's dog, you name a chicken threat and we probably have one nearby.
