Take a look at the coops in the Coops section in the articles pages here. Lots of great ideas!Hi DobieLover, thanks for the welcome!
My dad is orchestrating this new venture and we got a chain-link dog kennel that was sitting idle in someone's back yard as a beginning to the new coop, and materials purchased, but that's the only progress so far. I plan on getting Rhode Island Red hens, but I'm open to others since I enjoy chickens and have friends with bigger mixed flocks. Keeping a rooster is still debatable. We have just under two acres so they'll have plenty of room to roam, supervised, since we also have plenty of aerial predators around here, not to mention roaming cats, the neighbor's dog, you name a chicken threat and we probably have one nearby.
Welcome to BYC.
I highly recommend covering the chain link fencing with 1/2 inch hardware cloth.
