I just wanted to say thank you to all of the great posts on this thread! I have learned so much more than I could have ever hoped - thank you!! One area I should include is when I mentioned bread, I was only feeding it two to three times a week as a treat. But the groups have given me a lot of valuable information regarding bread that I had not considered - thank you!! I have begun feeding more oatmeal, yogurt, etc. in addition to their scratch and crumbles feed and the crew is LOVING IT! I have already seen a change in their energy level and seem more interested and alert when I come in. I believe our hen house has good ventilation but come Spring, we are looking to make some other changes to our hen house so we are going to look at that too.

Thank you again - Back Yard Forums is an outstanding site - I could never have learned as much as I have without it.

i haven't done this yet. I'll look into it; does fermenting smell?
It has been a few months since I made a batch. I was starting my batch with yogurt until I read that you should use vinegar. No---it was buttermilk. Now I know that I need a refresher course! I will go back and read more on the subject! (I think some people don't use any "starter" and it still ferments.) I didn't like how the buttermilk (edited) batch smelled. The yogurt batches odor is not unpleasant. It smells kinda like sour dough, I think. I have not tried fermenting grain. I would like to do that. It is supposed to make more nutrients available to the chickens; easier to digest and get more out of them. I just used their regular pellets or crumbles. One warning I read--- if it smells at all like alcohol, throw it out. Better safe than sorry. Lots of info on fermenting in the forum. Just do a search (top of the page).

Since I need to do some more "homework", I searched "fermenting" and chose this thread (that's when I remembered that I had tried buttermilk):

yes starter for fermented feed you can use apple cider vinegar but it has to contain "the mother" in it! I buy it at walmart! and you only need a little bit. You do not need to keep adding it once the feed is fermented just put new feed and water when you feed out, stir it up and you are good to go!! I have been feeding it for months now and my birds love it!

I was only saying what they said on fermenting feed for meatys. I did not mean to offend they said unpasterised and i can't spell to save my but
