It has been a few months since I made a batch. I was starting my batch with yogurt until I read that you should use vinegar. No---it was buttermilk. Now I know that I need a refresher course! I will go back and read more on the subject! (I think some people don't use any "starter" and it still ferments.) I didn't like how the buttermilk (edited) batch smelled. The yogurt batches odor is not unpleasant. It smells kinda like sour dough, I think. I have not tried fermenting grain. I would like to do that. It is supposed to make more nutrients available to the chickens; easier to digest and get more out of them. I just used their regular pellets or crumbles. One warning I read--- if it smells at all like alcohol, throw it out. Better safe than sorry. Lots of info on fermenting in the forum. Just do a search (top of the page).i haven't done this yet.
