I have 3 new chicks that constantly shake their head and gape. They are 8 weeks old Silkies, otherwise in good health; eating and drinking fine. No other symptoms. I think it might be gapeworm? Will Wazine17 help get rid of them? I know ivermectin will work, I just have NO idea as to the dosage and even how to use this on chickens. Any advise please? Thanks in advance for any replies.

We were losing young (4-6 week old) turkeys and pheasants left and right, once we started the eprinex we haven't had a problem (at least with gapeworms)

Its a difficult dose, ends up being like 0.03-0.06 cc, but for once my husband being diabetic and taking insulin was a good thing.

I don't know if you can find syringes that small without a prescription.

Dose is something like 1cc per 22lbs, so 1-lb/22-lb*1cc=0.045cc rounded up to 0.05cc. I just tried to keep them off dirt until they were almost one lb or I just about couldn't dose them. They lowest weight I dosed was 10oz (10/16/22=0.028 rounded up to 0.03)

Oh yeah, the stuff is oily too, and will rub the markings off most syringes if it comes in contact with the ink. We would use a larger (6cc) syringe to get it out of the bottle, and then use the tiny syringes.

We found it at Tractor Supply Company. I think the local Co-op might have had it also. It isn't really marketed for poultry, more for cattle (see the pretty bull on the label

), so don't ask about a poultry product, ask for it by name.

Eprinex, pour-on

It's a fairly large bottle, but maybe you can find some others in the area to share with, and I don't think it goes bad.

I'd just call around to your local agriculture stores and see if they have it.

I also just read from a thread posted earlier in the year that 2cc of injectable ivermectin/gal in their water for 3 days--then repeat in 2 weeks, works for gapeworm as well. Anyone else try this?

the injectible given orally works better for gape worm..

did you check their throats and see the red gape worm?
is it possible they have mites?
or some other kind of worms?

Ivomec/Ivermectin/Eprinex is found in the livestock section of farm supply stores such as TSC..

Wazine 17 (piperazine) only gets rid of adult round worms.

Sammi,

It is possible they may have something else. The symptoms just "fit" the gapeworm diagnosis. I have only had the birds 4 days and they came to me with these symptoms. Wouldn't ivermectin get rid of any mites too?
