Can you not have roosters where you are?Thank you for your reply.
We are in denial.
“Lucy” is vocal - when she wants our attention.
From everything we’ve read about identifying sexes- “her” tail feathers are rounded. But hens also crow! ? He/she is already crowing... not sure about the feathers around the neck.
We are heartbroken at the thought of rehoming as we are all ( us & our 8yr old daughter) are enjoying his/her personality otherwise.
We are deeply concerned that others in our flock may be in question as well.
We bought from a private hatchery local to us.
They were highly recommended and felt confident in their sexing abilities ( minus the silkies)
However, I think sad personal circumstances may have clouded abilities at the time of our visit.
We were reassured that we could trade any roosters for 3 hens If needed... but we have already come to love and can’t imagine going through this again.
We just want to know for sure ASAP and move on.
We have 7 “hens” to start.
We personally do not want to disturb the peace of our neighbors. We share a fence with two. So far, the crowing is no more disturbing than a barking dog. A handful of neighbors in our area of town have started backyard coops. Some have escape hens from time to time and generally our community gets a laugh and seems to be friendly toward the flocks of the neighborhood. We wish to consume the eggs our hens produce and do not want to raise chicks. Can you not have roosters where you are?
