I echo all of the statements offered above and add that just about any person with a love for animals and just a little space to work with can have a happy and bountiful flock of chickens. In exchange for a little attention and a spot in your back yard, they will offer you the best eggs you've ever tried and crazy antics to make you laugh.
Remember that you can keep fewer birds and give them more space to forage...that will mitigate the mess involved. Perhaps it is a labor of love, but most of the people in this forum don't look at their chickens as work or "mess". We simply enjoy them.
