So we got our chicks last night! So excited. We got 3 Buffs and 3 Barred Rocks. We had our heat lamp on and first thing this morning it went out. Is this normal?? Shouldn't the bulbs last longer than one day!!? Wondering if we had a faulty bulb.
Also, I noticed one of the buffs looks to be about 1 week old - whereas the others are a couple days old. It already has it feathers growing in on it's wings and starting to grow a little tail. Should we put this one in a larger box or leave it with the others? I know once they get to be a week or two old they tend to move a little bit away from the heat whereas the others will still need it.

Leave them together just make sure there is enough room in the brooder for the the chicks to get away from the heat lamp if they are too hot. They will find a temperature they are most comfortable in.
Good luck!

I'm glad you joined our "flock!"

No, heat lamps don't usually go out so quickly. Mine have always lasted for several months.

If the chicks are all getting along with each other, I would just leave the older chick in with the younger ones. It will move away from the heat if it gets too hot.

Good luck with your chicks!

I'm glad you joined our community.

Congratulations on the new chicks! If all the birds are getting along (even the older one), I'd leave them all together.

Glad you have joined us.

I have 3 BO and 3 BR as well.

If you still have the receipt on the lamp, try to take it back, they should last a long time.

Totally agree to leave them together, one week won't make a difference, and letting them stay together will solidify your flock.

Good luck with your new babies.

I agree leave the chicks together - make sure your brooder is large enough to accomdate them as they grow. They will also try flying out of the brooder and some won't be able to find their way back. It's a good idea to put a wire top on the brooder to keep chicks in and house pets etc. OUT. Generally chicks are not ready to give up the heat lamp until they are fully feathered out.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Congrats on the chicks! My heat lamps usually last for a very long time.
