We got the dreaded "Your not allowed" letter, should I fight it?

I agree with mrsengeseth, See if a friend or family member can keep your girls. You can make a temp place for them with a rubbermaid big container for like 15 bucks, it is easy and easy to clean. Put a screen on the top so they can breathe and don't get too much humidity. I would fight for the rights of others but it sounds like you are not going to make a difference for yourself until you actually move.

Hmmmm....if it's just the setback, can you create what looks like a chicken hotel in a shed placed next to your house or whatever so that you appear "legal" but if the girls just happen to visit their real housing, which you can perhaps make look a bit like a gardenshed, then well, they're just visiting. In other words, nothing changes except that it all appears legit. Because you just have two birds that I am sure are causing no harm whatsoever, and because you may be moving before very long, I am advocating outsmarting the silly system.

I am sorry you have to rehome (or place with family) your chickens.

It is just my opinion but fighting with the landlord realy doesn't help you in any way.

Do you know where you will be living when you move? If not your time might be well spent researching the new area, and finding a better situation for your next home (read the ordinances and rentals/real estate listings online) and check out which communities you might want to be in . You know what they say about looking foreward and not back.

I'd be finding my new place ASAP, and prefabing a new coop.

One, chickens are permitted in the city, they just have stupid setback laws and two, I Personally feel it is within my rights to own what ever kind of pet I want. If my neighbors can: have dogs that bark all night, cats that pee and poo in my garden, ride quads up and down the street, graffiti, shoot off fireworks, keep parrots, etc; then I should be allowed to kept a chicken or two for a pet and some fresh eggs. But that’s just me, I'm a rebel!

rebel or not I am assuming the rules where there before you got chickens..so that being said,,you are in a city, you should have found out what those rules are before bringing home chickens and play by their rules if you want to play at all,I am not saying dont fight them,I am saying you should have done it the correct way BEFORE bringing the birds homes..after all what are you teaching your children, (assuming you have children) that what the rules are for others doesnt apply to me??? You are not the only one, everyone that has chickens where they are not supposed to cries foul when they get "the letter",when they were breaking the rules all along. If you want to have any animal you want, you better move out of California period, they way they are going people wont be allowed to own a goldfish in that state, but thats for another thread..

Ouch,

Well I guess I didn't know that chickens aren't birds, at least according to my landlord. And the city told me they don't care as long as my neighbors don't. I checked with my neighbors and they didn't care. So I think I did follow all the rules. And as far as my children are concerned I hope that they learn to question authority; If there is a law or rule that is not clear or clearly stupid then they should question it.

Rehoming is one option and since you are moving, you could ask the zoning people if you can have a delay until you leave. This might prevent a fight that would frustrate and tire you for a cause that won't matter once you're gone...I'm so sorry this has become a hassle at the very time you plan to exit the premises.
