We don't need a building permit because it's under 120 square feet (per our town ordinances) however we had a county guy show up and tell us we need a zoning permit. Well, it's being built as a portable building....but he says so many people try to get around getting a zoning permit by "saying" it's portable but leaving it in one spot. Well, we want to reserve the right to move it.... because I'm not 100% I want to keep it where we're putting it (we're building it in the front yard, but would be moving it to where we intend to put it for now, so obviously weren't trying to HIDE anything!).

Anyway....lotsa people telling us we're being jerked around... so we're on hold while we figure this zoning permit out.... ugh.

Meanwhile, the chicks are getting bigger and bigger and need their coop! I've been unable to find homes for the roosters.....but still trying!

My issue is, we get the diagrams all figured out, pay the money for the zoning permit, etc etc, then decide to move it, and have to do this all over again......... we are making it portable for a reason. To have the option to move it. If any of you women are like me......I change my mind a lot! LOL

Anyway, I'm frustrated with the whole thing....and my excitement over the skeleton of the new chicken coop in the front yard is gone.....for now......

I hate to admit it, but that's why I decline getting a permit unless I'm pouring a foundation... I pay my exhorbitant taxes and am not bothering anyone, OR creating any kind of public hazard potential, so I am not the least bit concerned that i haven't notified the 'chicken police' that I have a coop in my back yard.

I readily admit forgetting to get permit for buildings, 16x32 barn showed up overnight actually took quite a few weekends, my coop, the county now says need a permit to place Playhouse type buildings, or prebuilt sheds, If it can come down the road at 55 MPH, I think it is sturdy enough to sit in my backyard on blocks. I dont bother with permits, its easier without bothering.

and that means more $$$ to spend on chicks.

MSP I just read your thread before going back to mine...yikes! Seems crazy! Where I live, even in the city of Madison, WI they can have a few chickens in their backyards! (no roosters)! I'm just outside....

Anyway.... I didn't know anything about zoning permits...I assumed this was all for new construction of PERMANENT STRUCTURES, so wasn't worried about it! I don't know if he was just driving by, or if someone called him or what, but a guy from the county zoning office just "happened" to be driving by and I just "happened" to be outside when he did. Great....

Anyway.......I'm hoping to get this rectified tomorrow....it sounds like I may be able to argue my case and get away without a zoning permit at all. We shall see. Just been a pain in ....well, you know!

Because Verona is so close to Madison I'm wondering if it would help you to get in touch with some of the people from www.madcitychickens.com?

They've done wonders in Madison and I'm sure would be more than willing to help you.

Just a thought...

Ah well....he was here again today...and I need one....I'm just gonna get the dern thing....and get it over with! Turns out the per square foot price is quite a LOT cheaper than what I thought it was.....so I'll save $60. That's more $ we can put into our coop!
