We have a Roo, but is he a White Cochin cross?

Quote:
No that was not mentioned. I suppose if I want show quality I would go elsewhere.

I don't know what breeds went into the development of the Light Brahma, could this be a throwback?

I would imagine it is like breeding Wyandottes, occasionally a single comb will show up. Since it is a large hatchery they would not discard the chick like a breeder would. as far as the coloring, hatcheries can send out some POOR quality chicks. I got Red Pyle Modern Game Bantams and only 1 feathered out in the red pyle color the rest were almost white. So it is possible that this is a terribly marked lt. Brahma.

Well I guess whatever it's breed, the general concensus is that I have a another rooster.

The hatchery has a 90% accuracy rate on sexing. I may or may not have as many as 4 rooster out of 21 pullets. It seems they will make this right. I have not heard back yet from the latest email.

Correspondence so far with the hatchery.

Subject: What is this chicken?

Hi,
I bought mixed pullets on the 25th of June, I thought this was a light brahma but it is all white and the comb is different.
Here is a photo of the mystery chick at 6 1/2 weeks with the 2 light brahmas.
More pictures included on the forum BYC;

I would appreciate any help. Also does this look like a rooster?

Thank You
Candace

It does look to be a light brahma, a small percentage of them will have a straight comb instead of the rose comb, however it does look like it may be a rooster. We do only guarantee 90% accuracy on sexing, but will be happy to issue a credit for a pullet next year. Please let us know if you would like us to issue a credit
Thank you

Thanks Sherry.

I have a white Light Brahma,cool.

I'll let you know soon about the pullet credit. I am afraid there are a few more that are roosters. I got 21 chicks altogether and I have been kinda waiting to see who else was crowing! Should I send photos of the 'suspects'?

Sherry,

From my online banking: 06-27-2008 CHECK/DEBIT -61.00
MCD PUR HATCHERIES CINCINNATI OH

They weren't mailed to me, I came in on Wednesday June 25th and picked them up. I was told on the phone before I came up, that the only things you had available were Araucanas, so I was coming up to get about a dozen of them, I was also told on the phone that I didn't have to preorder that qty. When I got to your hatchery a man came out of the back and asked what my order was. I explained the situation and I told him I had really wanted a mix..He said if I didn't mind getting a few of this or a few of that he could get some together for me.. He took my notebook which had the list of birds I wanted and went to the back and came back with a box of chicks. He told me he had everything on my list except the Comets. He quickly explained what breed was what. I emailed your hatchery and asked about the yellow chicks with the dots on their heads and was told they were the Buff Orpingtons. I got 3 each Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Light Brahmas, Araucanas, Golden Laced and Silver Laced Wyandottes. I also purchased at the same time a small screw lid type waterer for I about 3 dollars. All the chicks have survived and are healthy and doing well, they are now living with an older rooster that was given to me a few weeks before I got the chicks. Besides some gender confusion, I am pleased. This is my first time raising chicks, so I am certainly no expert on gender, but I am learning. I would appreciate it if you looked at the pic's with an expert eye.

One of the easter eggers is probably a male: http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o138/IloveJoe_photo/chickens/?action=view&current=DSC_0028-1.jpg

The Brahma on the right may be a male: http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o138/IloveJoe_photo/chickens/?action=view&current=DSC_0078.jpg

My husband swear on these SLW was crowing" http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o138/IloveJoe_photo/chickens/?action=view&current=DSC_0054.jpg

I had a friend order from Mt Healthy and they ended up with 30-50% roosters on all of their breeds. They ordered 3 different breeds and got basically straight run for the cost of all pullets, plus the expense of growing them out and having to rehome them. Such a shame when it works out this way.

I spoke with the Hatchery today and they apologized for any roosters that may be lurking in there with the girls.

I get a pullet credit for 5

chicks for my next order. While not too thrilled about getting roosters I am happy with the customer service there.

I still doubt the light brahma I have never seen a throw back with a single comb, all white yes but nothing ever than peacombs ...and it looks like a roo in the making....
