And they were very, VERY close. And a lot of them. We have never lost any birds to predators before, in our 2 and a half years of owning them. It's a record I'd like to keep up. Sadly, my 10 week old chicks were in a tent used to store firewood and was NOT predator proof. (We had little room to keep them and I've been keeping them there every day for the last week. With no problems.) I've been taking this risk for a few days now keeping my windows in my room open at night and making sure everything is as closed as possible. But I couldn't take risking my dear babies at certain death.

Sooooo, in the pitch black of the night I went out and removed all of my 10 week olds and separated them into a few groups. I put them in some plastic bins and put a few wire-caging for small windows on top to keep them there. They are now in the food area of my coop and I shut all of the windows. I didn't have time to get them water but I really don't have to worry about that now. It's been raining alot here in the northeast these days. Very little heat.

It was really spooky. All the while I was fixing a make-shift brooder I kept hearing noises from the woods.

Please send some coyotes-go-chew-on-a-dead-groundhog-somewhere-faraway vibes over here please.

We were just reading our local paper and there were coyote pups born in a nearby backyard. They think its cute, I think dangerous!!

We hear that bone-chilling sound most nights; coyotes howling after they've cornered something - a rodent or a neighborhood cat. I could be wrong, but I like to think that having a large dog keeps the coyotes from coming onto our property. At least we've never seen one. Hope your chickens are ok.

I hope they go away. Before we got chickens I used to howl back at them. I don't know what I said but they would stop after I would howl.

no coyotes...no coyotes...

Vibes sent. Coyotes in NY are strangers in a strange land. They have to be adaptable and quick, under those conditions. Your chooks are surely at risk.

I also sent some "erect-electric-fences," and "learn-to-set-traps-shoot-guns" vibes, too.

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping everything goes smoothly. The only animal that doesn't have a locked door is the pig and I hope she is okay. I'm keeping my windows open all the way tonight. The howling scared the you-know-what outta me! Lots of high-pitched howling and calls, probably the group trying to re-unite. We don't really hear them that often. And sadly, we don't own any humane traps. I prefer to evade predators, not lure them in.

I have to go to bed, even though I'm still afraid to. I'll update in the morning!
