And they were very, VERY close. And a lot of them. We have never lost any birds to predators before, in our 2 and a half years of owning them. It's a record I'd like to keep up. Sadly, my 10 week old chicks were in a tent used to store firewood and was NOT predator proof. (We had little room to keep them and I've been keeping them there every day for the last week. With no problems.) I've been taking this risk for a few days now keeping my windows in my room open at night and making sure everything is as closed as possible. But I couldn't take risking my dear babies at certain death.
Sooooo, in the pitch black of the night I went out and removed all of my 10 week olds and separated them into a few groups. I put them in some plastic bins and put a few wire-caging for small windows on top to keep them there. They are now in the food area of my coop and I shut all of the windows. I didn't have time to get them water but I really don't have to worry about that now. It's been raining alot here in the northeast these days. Very little heat.
It was really spooky. All the while I was fixing a make-shift brooder I kept hearing noises from the woods.
Please send some coyotes-go-chew-on-a-dead-groundhog-somewhere-faraway vibes over here please.
