We have been letting our 9-10 week old Bourbon Red turkeys out of their pen for a few minutes at a time for the last couple of weeks. One or two times before we let them explore the yard a little and last night they were around the chickens and chicks much more than they have been before.
The farm down the road where we got the poults from has not really had issues with blackhead so we are hoping they will not be susceptible. I guess we shall find out. It was hilarious to see the poults running up to the chickens all buddy buddy and chasing the chicks when they ran somewhere with no fear- just wanting to be friendly. It scared the crap out of the chickens who see them probably more as a threat/predator and the turkeys just have no clue. Our rooster doesn't know what to think
They still follow me and my husband around EVERYWHERE we go like we are their mother hen. It's actually nice because when we call them they will come. Anything I feed them out of my hand they eat like they are ravenous, but if it falls on the ground they might go back for it later (obviously not as tasty, LOL). We put them back into their pen at night and keep them there during the day. It's just nice to let them out after we get home from work since they LOVE eating the weeds/greens and exploring the yard. Anyone else had good flock integration with chickens and no problems with blackhead?
