I went and checked on our 4 newly hatched chicks at 10:20am and they were all under mumma hen happily cheeping away, so i left them and checked on them again at 12pm and there were only 2 chicks under mumma and couldnt find the other two, i freaked and looked everywhere for them, in the box, under the hay, outdoors(!) but no find, after hunting and hunting we decided they must have been got by a cat or squirrel

:hit as im thinking the other chickens wouldnt harm them would they? and when i checked on them mumma had moved and was a bit rattled as if something had scared her

Now we've moved mumma and the two remaining chicks and the remaining unhatched egg to a separate closed box on her own and she seems pretty happy in there now and contented so hoping theyre safe now

oooooh ,,, sorry about them, you should keep them safe until 4-5 weeks.
The last week I lost one chick then discovered that a cat had stolen him ,,,,,

4-5 weeks? right ill keep that in mind thanks!

we're thinking of fencing off a little area exclusivley (spelling?) for the chicks and mum so she can take them out and introduce them to the outdoors and teach them at her own pace, do you think this is a good idea as at the moment after the scare we have locked them in a homemade brooder box with the roof off and covered with wire meshing for sunlight and fresh air (am i being a little too overprotective?)
thanks!
