We lost a baby goat to the cold...

oh so sorry how awful

Kiss ana hug to you, and especially to your little one, whom I know loved Bucky Buck especially. We had a baby 3/4 fainter doeling born yesterday, almost lost her to the cold today. We'll work with Rahab's mommy tomorrow and see if we can't get the milk to flow, apparently she wasn't giving enough to keep little Rahab fed and warm today -- she was seriously hypothermic by dinnertime. Pam brought her over here and she, my mom and I and my Belgian Malinois worked with her for about an hour -- warming, feeding, nurturing. Tootsie, the Malinois, agreed to let Pam take the baby home because she was doing so much better. Any sick goatling she takes up with, acts as mama, etc. We had to use a hair dryer to warm her in a warm hay nest with blankets over her -- and finally got a few dribbles of colostrum in her. If we need to keep bottle feeding, we have a source for cow colostrum, and plenty of goat milk as we have lots of nannies with babies. Blessings on you all, and I hope Flash and Spark behave! Pam's daughter in law uses pampers with a slot cut out for the tail!

Thanks all. I know that in the circle of life these things happen but dang! it still stinks.

On the up side, the 2 remaining triplets are doing well. When we brought them in , one was acting a bit funky and disoriented. After some warm drinking water and extra rations, he perked back up. Going to remain frigid here for a few more day so am going to fortify the stall with extra straw this morning and put alll nannies and babies together for extra body heat.

Staying in the bathroom is great for emergencies but until I get some goat Pampers its not working...lol. And the little monsters ate my houseplants that were in there! I forgot that even baby goats can jump. So, one of them jumped up and knocked the plants off the dresser (I have hoofprints on my antique dresser now) and then they both enjoyed a leisurely green snack. Gah!!! Ingrates!! But they are so cute, who can stay mad for long?

Those little stinkers. But, I know how you feel. We have lost quite a few babies to this freaking cold. Out of 19 surviving kids we are now down to 13. WE've had a total of 26 kids born in Dec. Very frustrating I know. We now have 7 little ones in our heated garage until it wrms up enough to put them back in our barn.

Sorry for your loss. I don't have any babies on the ground yet, but both of my Nubian does are bagged up and I'm praying they don't drop those kids in the next week while it's below freezing here. They shouldn't be due until the end of January, but I'm afraid they're going to come early. My pygmy doe is also looking HUGE and I have no idea when she's due since she was already pregnant when I got her. She better hold those suckers in there for the next week!!
