The little 3 week old off-hatch we had had been losing ground the last couple of days - Sara was hand feeding and watering her yesterday, but Teeny Peep died over night. My poor girl is going to be so sad, she is still asleep right now. I'm assuming Teeny Peep was just a bit weak to start with, or got bowled over one too many times or something along those lines, but I know Sara will ask if it is because of something she did - her other favorite pullet mysteriously died last year- fine one night, gone by noon the next day, and ever since, Sara has been worried that it is because she loves them too much. I know THAT isn't the case, but I do wonder if more handling is bad in some way - any thoughts?

So sorry for your loss. I don't know about the overhandling part - we got our 1st peeps last year before I found this site and I had read not to handle too much, but we still played with them a good bit. Some people say the more handling the better. And, I don't think you can love a chicken too much, if that were true, most folks on this site wouldn't have any chickens.

Oh I am so sorry for you both. Please

Sarah for me. It is never easy to lose a chick. Usually there really is no explanation when they are that young.

I had the same problem yesterday: one of our week old peeps died. It was fine in the morning and then by the evening it wouldn't even move.

My 4 year daughter was pretty upset. We called grandma and grandpa for a shoulder to cry on and my dad (grandpa) told her THE sweetest thing. He said: Don't worry, she's up in heaven now. Even angels need fresh eggs to eat.

it perked her right up to know that the angels were taking care of her little peep and that they would have as much enjoyment from her chicken as she would.
