We Need Your Input! 4 Season Duck Coop & Run Construction Suggestions & Photos

Miss Lydia,

I think I would have cried seeing all of those abandoned Pekin. Then, I probably would have desperately tried to round them up and take them home. I can see it now.... me chasing abandoned domestic ducks and them running away from me. LOL!

That would make a pretty pic because I would be right there with you trying to round them up. Maybe we could start a waterfowl santuray for dumped water fowl. I would love to do that actually.
I wish I had the space to take them, It's heart breaking to see them all, knowing that when it gets to be too many what happens to them all. There was an article in a newspaper close by that my dad brought for me to read, about a young teenagers that has an Indian Runner as a pet, well it would have been a sweet story if the parents hadn't said from the time she was a youngin they went to TSC every spring and got her ducks then they would keep them till they got old enough "To take care of themselves" then they would go and release them somewhere.

and now this duck who is 3 years old is consider high mantience by this teen will probably get dumped at some point. I wish I had a way of contacting this family but I'm sure others who read it were just as upset and hopefully someone can run interference before the poor Runner gets dumped. What have they taught their daughter? so sad.

Unfortunately there are too many people that just don't see that what they're doing is wrong...
On another note we got the roof on our Duck Shack yesterday! The doors are all on, and now we just have to do a few fill-ins and trim work.

Hi Duckiefanatic!

I love the picture of your pen! I see you're in Northern Indiana. Could you tell me a little bit more about how you constructed it? I have plenty of wood available. I wanted to build a spacious pen to go along with their coop so they will be able to be outside fairly safely when we are at work. It looks like you used wood and hardware wire. It looks like you have a door too. If you can remember any details like: what kind of latches you used, how you attached the wire, etc., it would be helpful. Approximately how tall is it? Are your winters fairly cold and snowy? Did you insulate your coop. I know ducks have down and feathers but I am concerned about potential ice build up on the inside walls of the coop. : )

We have a farm animal sanctuary.
Our three ducks came here after being dumped at the local SPCA . The shelter rings me and i load tots and a couple dogs into he car and away we go to collect them. The children Love rescue trips
If you see domestic ducks that need to be rehomed! Ring your local humane society or animal shelter.
I think ou are in the catskills.... There is a fantastic farm sanctuary in saugerties, ny

I have a thread up with my coop and all the things I used. A lot of the wood as reused that my Dad gathered. We are actually acquiring more wood right now to accommodate my other ducks. The first pen was intended for them but I got Mandie's and pheasants so they got that pen ( and it turned out a little small.) So this spring will be intensive!!

Would love to see pictures of the coop!!!
