Hi All,

My name is Liz and I live in Wisconsin. To make a long story short, we live near a farm and one Saturday morning we found a chicken eating bugs in our strawberry patch. She looked like the same breed as the farmer near us so my husband took her back and placed her in their chicken yard. After doing this three times (with her returning within an hour each time), we agreed to talk. to the farmer the next day. We found out that some neighbor girls had hatched an egg this spring and raised the chick until it got to big. They then returned it to the farmer. He felt it would be killed by the other chickens and planned to butcher it. It kept escaping his solo pen. He offered to butcher it "when we get tired of it". Well it's been over a month now and we quite enjoy little chicken. I found this site via google because I think we need to start caring for her properly. Here are the facts:

I estimate she is about 4 months old and is a Plymouth Barred Rock Hen.

She has been living under our deck which is not ideal for us because we cannot get her or any eggs if laid from underneath the deck.

I have put out a feeder and a waterer. Right now the feeder has a mix of cracked corn and oats. I plan to buy a back of layers feed from the local co-op. I supplement the grains with meal worms and japanese beetles from the yard. Also a bit of watermelon when we have it. She stays in our yard and forages the yard, especially in the bushes, garden, and under our bird feeders. She seems to love Nyjer seed from our finch feeders.

I have put up an old dog house near the deck and covered the bottom with straw. She goes in there occasionally because I see feathers in there, but she does not roost in there. I have not yet found any eggs in the yard or under the deck (I looked with a flashlight).

She loves to follow us around as we do yard work and "talks" to me the whole time. My son calls her CC for crazy chicken.

Is it possible to raise and care for a single chicken in our back yard? What else should I do for her? Any ideas for winter? Can I get her to start living in a coop or the dog house and not under the deck?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here are some pictures of her.

Shes just perfect and what a great home for her! She knew you guys needed one ... lol

She definitely needs a few friends though - for flock reasons. No really, she told me so ...

She looks like mine! I would say a month or so and she will lay nice brown eggs. Someone told me when their comb starts to get red.

The dog house sounds nice! make sure she is safe from predators. She must love you all and you will love her right back. A chicken match made in heaven~

Welcome to the site and the new addiction to chickens!!

congrats and welcome. you too will soon have chicken fever like the rest of us. this has been so much fun and lots to learn since the begining. oh and I just LOVE your yard!

You have a beautiful garden and a lovely little hen to go with it. Sounds like you're doing a good job of keeping her safe & happy. She should be ready to begin laying in about a month or so. Take a look at the variety of coop designs possible for just a few hens. Your girl sounds very content to be an only hen, but ideally chickens do better with a flock-mate or two. (Or twenty)

Your hen needs a place to be safe from predators like raccoons & foxes, especially at night when she's asleep & less wary. She will also need to be kept safe from dogs during the day. You could make her a little coop or portable pen and keep her in it for about a week. After that she should be oriented to it as her home and you can let her free-range again, and she'll return to the coop at night. You can also fix a nest box for her in there, and let her out each day after she's given you her egg.

Enjoy your great chicken, Barred Rocks are my favorite breed!

Thanks for all the wonderful comments. I would love to get her some friends at some point. I have to double check on the zoning because even thought there is a farm right behind us (you can see the barn in one of my photos), I believe residential areas are limited to 5 hens and no roosters.

Right now I really just want to get her the right food and the right house.

Just get a bag of layer at the feed mill. You might also want to pick up some scratch, and use that as a treat.

She'll also be happy with any left-over or insect damaged food from your garden, but about 20% greens is about as much as you want to feed her. If she's got plenty of places to eat weeds&seeds, bugs, worms, etc she probably won't use a lot of feed, but she'll need a full ration come winter time.

You might also want to get a nesting box ... she might be ready for that soon, beats hunting in the flower beds ...

If she's happy alone, great, though she might appreciate you getting one more hen for company.

Yeah ... that's how the chicken-collecting disease starts ... just one more, then another ...
