We won!

Final count was done and we did indeed win, however it was only by *40* votes. Now the election results just need to be certified and then we will have officially won.

Congratulations! After reading the whole thread I'm surprised you only won by 40 votes (did I read that right?)! It sounded like you had more support then that. I admire your patience but it sure paid off, good for you and Yreka!

We had a super low voter turn out. 891 voted yes, 851 voted no. Something we discovered is that a lot of people thought this issue had already been decided, and that hens were already legal. I dont know how many times I heard, "I thought they decided this last fall." or, "When did chickens become illegal?" It is truly amazing how little people pay attention to politics unless it directly effects them. Therefor they didn't bother paying attention to the elections. Also, there was a big last minute push by the opponents. Sadly, we were pretty burnt out and didn't do much to counter them.

Here are the final election results. It is measure M, and the last page.[=http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/elections/DOCS/Elections/060512/FinalElectionResults_June5_12.pdf][/]

I don't live in our town limits but was surprised when I read in the paper that it required a $250 permit to have two hens, no roosters. Someone petitioned to change it to no permit required unless you want more then 2 hens. Then you have to pay the permit....at least that's how I think it goes. But I grew up in this town and there's still chickens running close to town so I didn't know there was such an ordinance. I think with the new popularity in keeping chickens, the ordinances are slowly being brought out as neighbors complain.

You must feel really good that your efforts paid off.
