Dear friend of NYC, I am new at raising chickens, I was gifted a rooster and a laying hen, Paco and Emilia, I don't know how old they are but they seemed healthy and the hen after a couple of weeks started laying eggs one every day, my only problem with them is they do not want to sleep in the coop, they prefer staying on the guava tree and the hen comes down to lay the egg in the morning. My worry is that this is the rainy season in south Fl. sometimes it rains every night, should I leave them be or try to teach them to sleep inside the coop?
The other and more concerned subject is that after few weeks I discover another hen in the yard, I don't know where or how it came, it looks smaller and thinner than Emilia, I named her Goldie for her color, I think she is jounger but I don't know how to tell. From the beginning I notice Goldie eats less and walks slower, they were picking on her so I separated them and checked her thoroughly, I found a wound on top of one wing, it was full of maggots, I cleaned, desinfected and put antibiotic cream and gave her antibiotics and some vitamins and it seems to be working, she started eating more and looking better, today after a few weeks she started to look sluggish again and like imbalance using her wing to keep balance, I checked the site of the wound and it looks fine it's closed and the scab is falling off.
Please help me I'm out of ideas on what to do. Thank you for your help.
