Weasel near the hen house

Yesterday morning I spotted what appears to be a long tail weasel in our wood pile, which is not too far away from my chicken coop. I watched him for most of the day. He hung out mostly by the wood pile, and then a bit by our uncut wood pile, which is closest to the bird feeder (and further away from the chickies). I never once saw him eyeing, or nearing the chicken coop, but I know weasels are nasty.. i had almost an entire flock get taken out by one back at my parents house....

My hen house is up on stilts, and the run has wire mesh on the bottom half which is dug in the ground. the door to the run is chicken wire, which i know is a weak spot, and the overhead is not full covered by wire/ netting... how worried should i be about this guy?

my Hubby did sit out and try to shoot it yesterday with the air rifle.. and if all else fails, my neighbors have rat traps he will let us use. The dogs are proving not to be the best weasel hunters..

I would also make sure your coop is predator-proof. How well protected is your coop? But yeah, also I would make a weasel trap to catch it
 
I would be very worried with chicken wire run door.

Are you in an area that is legal to use a 22 rifle? You can get a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 for less than 200 and ammo for 5 cents a round. Or is your air rifle hunting rated?
 
thanks for all the replies. I am planning on adding the wire mesh to the door. to make it more secure. the coop itself i think is very predator proof. there is no where that i can see where it can get in... all the doors are able to be tightly shut and the main window is mesh that is about 1/4in.

we are in an area where we can use a 22, and we did ask the neighbors around us (only 2) if they were ok with us doing that, which they are. the air rigle is quieter and can take out a gray squirrel if hit in the right spot... I am not sure of the make of the air rifle.. its my hubby's.


for the trap- do I need a box? the area where we would put it, is small enough that a cat won't fit through (which would be my biggest worry)
 
Trapper here

We run weasel boxes with rat traps as the trap. I also use a modded mink box (its just a mink box with a hole for the entrance, big enough for a weasel or mink too small for cats or coons) with a 120 conibear/body griper.
