Hi everyone. New member here. Catherine from long island. My question is weather related. Our winters are rough and I wonder what chickens can tolerate living in a decent coop? Thank you all and love this site.

when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds most of the heavy breeds (brown egg layers) will be fairly cold hardy, the rose or peacombed breeds especially, ie Wyandottes, Brahma, Buckeye, Chantecler and EEs.
 
Catherine, nice to meet you. This past winter has been a doozy for many areas across the country. Chickens generally tolerate cold much better than heat. You will probably get the best intel from folks living in your area. Go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to locate and post on your state thread. Ask what breeds are hardy for them and what type of coop works best for temp extremes. Good luck to you.

Some cold hardy chicken breeds include: buff orpingtons, black australorps, wyandottes, cochins, brahmas, easter eggers, rhode island reds, barred rocks and jersey giants. Here is a link on choosing breeds

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Most dual purpose breeds are cold hardy and some like Australorps, Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Jersey Giants, Wyandottes, Brahmas, Cochins, Delawares, Dominiques, Black and Red Sex Links, and Chanteclers are especially cold hardy. Alaska Backyard Chickens has a list of recommended breeds for Alaska at http://akchickens.org/getting-started/recommended-breeds/. If these breeds can handle Alaska's winters, they will handle your winters with no problems. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can.
