I got a web cam for my chicks - plan was to have it on my blog so family/friends could watch the chick grow up.

Had the computer guy come to set it up. He said I needed a different modem. Got the different modem. Still doesn't work.

Different computer guy says it's because I'm on Verizon DSL.

Anyone here have an experience with this or have any advice?

I have to be on DSL because we have too many computers in the house to add another one to the hub there. My computer is in a detached office off the main house so DH is reluctant to spend the $$$ to run cable over there and start another hub.

I'm not hardware-savvy so am about to give up...

You don't say what the problem with the web cam is, I doubt it has anything to do with the high speed setup.

agreed, the issue may be the USB cable or a faulty Hub.
or the Cam itself isnt compatable.
if we have a bit more information , make etc it might help figure out what the proble may be.

did you try running it in compatability mode? sometimes older cams are touted as new modles but not only different packaging.
sounds like you not only got one but two techs who didnt want to spend the time setting it up.
DSL usually doesnt make a difference with them being compatable with your computer.

Do a yahoo opr google search for "How to setup your own webcam" you'll get 100 sets of instructions.
I doubt very seriously the problem is your DSL service. Check to see of your website will allow direct video data flow (probably not).
If not then you'll have to set yourcamera to take a picture, then FTP upload it to your site every minute or so to get continuous updates but you have to HTML your site to refresh every minute to that people can see the new pic etc...
Or to make things easy you can set it for one a day just to show growth progress.

The computer consultant told me the problem is the modem.

He said that Verizon's modem "competes" with the router and that the two will not "share" dominion over things like a webcam. Therefore, one or the other will constantly shut the other out.

I don't even know where to begin to try to deal with that...
