I have a terrible time with creeping buttercups & other weeds. They are everywhere and come right back. I tried laying down brown (Not painted) cardboard, then 6 inches of wood chips. Works like a charm. Just remove all tape and plastic labels.

I have done the cardboard thing too. I use piles of oak leaves on top to hold them down. It has worked VERY well. It's especially helpful when I have big open areas that will be covered eventually by squash plants. Space-wise, it's half my garden. Weeding-wise, it's 5% of the work.

One thing to watch out for: It can block water from getting to the ground below. Good for killing weeds, but can hurt your plants. I make sure I leave some open ground right where I planted, and water that ground thoroughly when I water the garden.

Have you tried spraying vinegar on them? Vinegar will kill most weeds in my area but you have to be careful not to get it on things you want to keep.

Our berries are between the cardboard so they soak in water. But good tip

Does it kill the roots too? Creeping buttercups, morning glory, dock & wild blackberries are a recurring problem.
