Weeds are Better than Apples

It's the coldest morning yet here in my mild, central North Carolina winter with frost still lingering on the ground in the shadows as 10am approaches.

I had a couple spotty apples to toss into the pen today and I knew that the recent rain would have loosened up the roots on a flourish false dandelion that was out of reach of the mower so that got pulled and tossed into the pen as well. The pictures tell the story.

The chickens' idea of what constitutes a "treat" don't necessarily line up with our idea about it.

My yard where I lived when I had the in-town flock had an area that was infested with beggar-ticks. When I'd pull those and toss them in the run you'd see the Velociraptor come out in the chickens -- they loved that weed above all other possible food.

You are comparing two different things. My girls like apples but if they haven't had greens for a while thats all they want. now if its a raisin fuggedaboutit! my girls would bust up in a KFC and jack up the coronel for raisins.

My flock gets food waste by the wheelbarrow-full, and greens are always of the the top of their list. About the only thing that can compete is a split open Mellon.
