My girls get all the garden and flower bed weeds, all the grass clippings, most of the kitchen scrapes (we had a worm bin too that needs some) and whatever else randomly now that their enclosed run is wood chips. They had destroyed the grass before we put down the chips and 3 weeks of drought killed the covered grow frames I had made so I feel like dumping the buckets of weeds helps them explore/scratch/extra treats

Chickens ability to leverage waste items like food scraps, grass clippings, and garden scraps is one of my favorite things about them.

The current chicks think that sourgrass, aka wood sorrel, is heaven on earth.

The in-town flock loved nothing more than a nice, big beggar-tick. They'd eat beggar tick as eagerly as they ate scratch.

I’m not an experienced keeper but I have found that they usually can’t resist big clumps of grass or whatever you can pull up while weeding garden or flower beds. Most of the time it’s not so much the vegetation they’re interested in but the dirt clump & whatever bugs are living in the dirt. They’ll make short work of it!
