We've had these babies 1 week now. A few not in the pic, must be camera shy. Started with 8 RIR, and 10 Black Marans. Due to our ignorance with chicks, we've lost 2 RIR and 3 BM. Most was due to the survival of the fittest or taking a bath in the water dish. It's funny how these little things run your life from the start.

For such independent little babies they sure to require a lot of work don't they? Yeah, they can move about and forage but they do need a few requirements in order to survive. I had a friend who purchased a few chicks from a feed store and simply put them in a cat carrier. She didn't realize they needed a heat source and food that is easily visible. But she learned quickly and now had a very nice flock of chickens.

Yes, early on after loosing the first 2. The next two I believe were sick from day 1 but what do I know. Next was a one eyed little guy with a crooked neck. I think the kids helped him along and the last was me forgetting to plug the big light in on them at night. Knew it as soon as I saw him that morning. The lessons we learn are sometimes heartfelt, (not to mention in the wallet.)
