Hello! Long time chicken owner, but haven't gotten chicks in several years. These are from a hatchery out of Wisconsin, I live in Minnesota, and it's the first time I've ordered from this hatchery.
1) What type of bird, age and weight: Week old (hatched Mar. 11), lavender orpington chick. Seems lighter then the other chicks I have (24).
2) What is the behavior: I went to check on them this morning, and the one was laying away from the others and seemed to be breathing somewhat fast and not getting up. I picked the chick up and noticed it's legs were really weak and it wasn't really trying to stand in my hand. I turned it gently over on it's back (in my hand), and it perked up a bit and started pushing with it's legs. I set the chick back down in the brooder and it seemed to stand, but didn't try to walk anywhere. I gave it a small push, and it walked a few steps. When I checked on them an hour later, it was laying down/sleeping with some other ones.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?: I checked on them this morning around 10 AM and it was like that, it is currently around 12 PM (CST). They were all fine the night before.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?: Last week when I first got the chicks, we had one really small and runty one that passed away that same day a few hours after I got them. It was super small and wasn't trying to stand at all, but I figured it just happened to be like that since the rest of the chicks were fine and running around.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma: No, the chick seemed find outwardly.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation: I used pine shavings in the brooder and I notice that the chicks have been pecking at the shavings. I'm also worried that it may have gotten a bit trampled from the rest of the chicks. They've been treated fine, but they always run around and chirp loudly when I approach the brooder.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all: I dipped it's beak in water and it drank, but it had no interest in eating. It also didn't put it's head back when it drank like normal.
8) How does the poop look?: Not sure.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?: Monitoring, and giving water.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment?: Treat by myself. I plan to get apple cider vinegar after work this evening and add it to their water.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use: My brooder is in an old rubber stock tank. I have two heat lamps, one w/ a red light and one w/ a white light. I have two waterers, and one feeder. I currently have pine shavings in the brooder. (I'm able to switch to straw if yall think that would be helpful).
