Week old chicks using nipple waterer

It did not take long to get tired of cleaning out the traditional inverted jar watering arrangement for chicks. I rigged up a nipple in an empty drink bottle and hung it in the cage with them. I removed the watering trough. It took a while, but the curious one set the others on the track. Now all 5 of the are using it. No more poopy water.

The big chickens use the nipples outdoors. Now the little peepers are on track. Not too young to learn.

It worked out better than expected.

Mine are using an old rabbit water bottle. It took them less than two day to figure it out. ALTHOUGH I should have put out a standard water dish as backup. The couple of chicks that didn't figure it out overnight got a bit droopy before catching on.

I went with the nipples on a small bucket in the corner of the brooder box. But I had the same thought as you and put a small dish with marbles and the water next to the nipple bucket. I can't wait to find out how soon they use the nipples.

I place a traditional waterer in the brooder for the first week or so. I also place a nipple waterer during the same time. I place the nipple at eye/head level to the chicks and just at the edge of the traditional waterer. That way, when they accidentally run into it, they figure it out instantly. Once one chick uses it, the others catch on rather quickly. After I see more than one chick using it, I remove the other waterer.

I started my hatchery chicks on the nipple from the moment they came out of the USPS box. No problems. Clean - easy, easy, easy.

Is the nipple the kind with the ball inside the tube or the nipple that requires a nibble to activate? Thanks!

This is the waterbottle I used in my brooder. I used the same type of nipple on gallon pitchers for my coop.
