My girls have lost a lot of weight this summer. I started feeding them Layena pellets about 6 months ago cause they were being really messy with the crumbles. Is it possible that they've lost weight cause I've moved to a bigger food size, though the pellets aren't that big. Both my girls are full grown and don't seem to mind other foods (berries) the same size as the pellets?

It's possible, what type of chickens do you have? I know my showgirls and silkies have a hard time eating pellets and they get crumbles. The polish do fine with the pellet.

* I worried a lot about my hen when I switched her from her home mix to Layena, because she lost weight, too. Part of the problem was an overgrown beak that made it harder for her to eat. I think the other part is simply that it didn't have enough fat/protein calories. I started adding one scoop of home mix for every 2 of Layena and the situation stabilized. (Lurky-- I know a bison-based dog food that trimmed down my fat dog and cat wonderfully!! Cat esp. is rock solid muscle now!! Can't say it's all that tasty, though. Want I should pm you the brand name?? )

The one that has lost the most weight has a longer lower beak than upper. It might add to the problem. I made some mush for her tonight to see if she could eat it better. Tomorrow I'll go get some more crumbles and see if that helps. I just hate the mess they make with it. Its like a sandbox to them.
