Hey everyone!

Noticed today this weird black looking thing on one of my hens wattle. I live in Canada, got four hens, and it’s been noticeably colder in my neck of the woods than normal.

Is this frostbite? It’s definitely not flat, it is raised…goodness, what is it? And what to do I do?

She seems happy enough, is eating, drinking, she’s not lethargic or acting strange, and just having a good ol time with the other hens.

I'm taking a shot in the dark, but I don't want to leave you hanging with something that menacing looking.

Poultry DVM suggests it could be fowl cholera. You may want to isolate her until you know for certain.

Tagging @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock and @casportpony in case they're around to take a look.

Is she still acting normal? I'm hoping it's something more simple like a wound, etc.

Edit: Relieved to see I'm overreacting! 😅

Welcome To BYC

What does it feel like?

To me it looks like it may be a scab where the wattle has been damaged.

If she's eating/drinking and active, I'd monitor it for a few days to see if there's any changes. If it heals, gets worse, etc.

Keep us posted.

Just checked her this morning and, yeah, she’s pretty happy go lucky. I’m thinking it could be frostbite. I live in Canada and it’s been noticeably colder than it usually is for my area.

None of the other hens are acting weird and this girl certainly isn’t either. Gave them all fresh water mixed with some apple cider vinegar…

…and to my surprise I found an egg in one of the boxes! Can’t really complain getting some eggs this early in the year lol

I will keep monitoring it. It certainly looks like the scab/wound/whatever is getting smaller.
