Hi. I was gifted 2 chicks today and don’t exactly know the breed. They look healthy. I got them to eat mealworms but they would occasionally peck at the chick food. I kept on thinking why do they have weird chests and I picked them and I saw that it is a giant bulge. I’ve had chicks before and I’ve never seen this happen. Is this normal? Also if any one could tell me the breed. I attached a pic of their mother and one of the chicks where you can see the bulge.

It is probably the crop so yes completely normal.

Thanks.

Ok. I was worried. Do you have any ideas on the breed?
Your welcome. And I don’t know breed if it’s the chicks your asking about you would probably need to let the feather out before we can determine breed and if it’s the older hen in the first picture your talking about I am not sure what breed she is either but someone on here may know the breed

Ok thanks. The hen is the mother of the chicks so if someone knows her breed then I would know the chicks breed.

which bulge ?

as a rule, they bulge a lot and it's probably just fine as they are like that, you can see what they ate and it's all gross to be able to do that.

the long legs on mum say game, I don't know much about the 'game' breeds. it's "something game"

I got a clearer picture. I don’t have many pics and it’s pretty late here. The entire area is bulging out. Sorry that it’s a bit blurry. I was in a hurry when I took these.

nothing wrong, they're like that, n it's bizzare. I often worry their crop skin is far too thin, but hey, that's how they are.

They're all good.

The crop is a temporary food storage pouch in the middle of the esophagus. It is external to the body cavity and attaches to the right breast just under the skin. It allows for them to quickly swallow foods and then go into hiding. An evolutionary trait common in many prey animals. From the crop, food then continues down the esophagus to the proventriculus or first stomach where digestive acids are added. From there food continues to the gizzard or mechanical stomach where those foods are ground up with the aide of grit.
