Today I had a hen go missing, we looked everywhere for her for almost 2 hours. We live a bit in the woods so we were concerned that a fox or other predator got her (we had a hen taken by a fox during the day about a month ago). No feathers anywhere and no sign of any attack. Finally, my husband was sitting on a chair in our garage, which we had already searched quite thoroughly, and he heard a faint cackle. He looked towards the sound and noticed a plastic planter lying upside down on the garage floor with a few toes sticking out. He quickly lifted the planter and found her unresponsive and limp but gasping for air. The planter had been towards the front of the garage in a very sunny spot and it was brutally hot. We doused her with cool water and kept dipping her beak in water once she came around. I personally think it was more a lack of oxygen than hyperthermia but she finally seemed to make a full recovery in about an hour. The only thing we can figure is that she was on the table where I had the planter, which is shaped like a mixing bowl and about 12 inches in diameter and probably 8 inches deep, and she knocked it to the ground, it landed face up then she jumped down, landed on the edge of it and it flipped over on to her and trapped her. Our rooster was going crazy, pacing in front of the garage. Guess we should've listened to him. The point of my long winded story is that hens can suffocate in the weirdest places. What's the weirdest way you have had a chicken get injured?
