WEIRD chicken behavior

We have a very large pair of owls that hunt on our property. They've never been a problem for my chickens, but they give my cat a hard time! The first time I saw them, my husband and I were sitting on our porch watching the cat play with a mouse. The owl came swooping out of nowhere, snatched the mouse from the cat and scared the crud out of him! The said owl just sat in a tree and ate the mouse right in front of the cat, as if to say "ha, ha sucka".

Funny stuff!

Wish I had seen that. My only encounter with an owl was the one who hit my helmet one night and almost knocked me off my bike.

They don't make an Icon for the real event. It was in a power dive with its talons wide open. The talons penetrated and stuck in the faceplate of my full Shoei just missing my eyes. Going 50 mph in the middle of a hairpin S with the Farmhouse front door right in front of me. Going through the second hairpin with head back over the sissy bar like Luke Skywalker

Did I tell you about the amount of week old gutz a Turkey Vulture leaves behind after bouncing off your chest? (Oh wrong forum)

Oh goodness! Vultures stink when they're alive, that must've been horrible! On both accounts (though my imagination conjured up a pretty awesome image of Luke Skywalker doing some Jedi stuff on a rad motorcycle ;) ).

I thought it was an Owl that hit you? According to the previous post. I'm confused!

Yes You Are. I've been riding since I was 16. I've been hit by everything but a Black Bear!
Oh thank goodness! I'm correct! I thought I was going to have to change my blonde hair color to something else!

Well let us know when you get hit by Big Foot! I really want to know if they exist!

Molly loves to be held too. She'll do the slinky thing with her head and neck up underneath my neck. Then she'll duck her head under my arm! I've never had a Silkie I couldn't tell apart. Other than when they were soaking wet! I'd listen to their sounds they made and then I'd know whose who! LOL And I really needed to know which was which!

I had a crazy thing going years ago when I lived in a very small house! It was 115 degrees outside. I couldn't stand seeing my silkies burning up in the heat. So I started stacking cages in my kitchen! Yep! MY KITCHEN! I had 36 cages stacked together! And every one of them had newspaper and fresh hay in them. THAT was a daily JOB I tell ya! Then there were around six more carriers throughout the house with silkies setting or just hatched babies!

The ones in the kitchen would raise hell to be let out! I'd open the door, prop the screen door open and one by one set them on the floor to rush outside. I had a lot of mommas with older babies too that went out together. Then at dark-thirty! I'd do the door thing again and they'd all march into the kitchen. THAT'S why I needed to know who was who. Had to get the babies with the right momma! LOL

And then of course when cold weather rolled around? I still kept them inside. We were all in a habit by then! I also had the occasional hen that wanted to come inside to lay their egg too! You might say I had a revolving door for the chickens use!

And no I'm not crazy! Just love my Silkie's way more than most! I made sure they stayed VERY comfortable!

Yes, my dear, you ARE crazy.,

But let's face it, we all do crazy things for our babies. I spend 20 min chopping things and making oatmeal for their dinner. Where's mine? Then I have to cook for me. Can't do it everyday, but love to watch them going insane over the mush.

OH! I see someone does think I'm crazy? Well now I feel really special and loved! LOL My mom couldn't understand how I could sleep thru all that noise they made in the kitchen. I told her; "A dark room with a box fan roaring close by will drown out any noise"! LOL

Isn't it weird how we always, well almost always, do for our kids and then ourselves? I tell my husband all the time; "They don't understand the WAIT factor like we humans do"! When had the kitchen crew? I'd get the doors opened and then set each one on the floor so they could rush outside. I'd say; "You're Free, you're Free with each one. Then when they'd come back in at dark-thirty I'd say; "So you didn't like your freedom after all?" LOL

When I was in the Army! There was this female sargent that joined our office. She wasn't all there mentally! My section sargent used to say while doing his fingers in the cutting motion; "I'm cutting the grass, I'm cutting the grass" in reference to her! It was funny at the time! (You'd just have to be there to understand it though)! Well wouldn't you know it? I'm now outside with a pair of scissors, cutting the grass, cutting the grass!

Just to keep my inside kids happy while they are inside during bad temps or weather! And it's a scorcher outside right now.

I've already had to go out several times to see what Martha Mae and Marvin were yelling about. It's probably the RAT because they are focused on the dark spots under the barn. Gotta work on getting rid of the varment!

We feed our kids: apples, canned corn, grass, chickstarter, hen scratch, parakeet seeds, white bread and bologna. Maria gets the occasional bites of honey buns and ice cream that she shares with daddy too! I'm sure theres something I'm forgetting, but you get the jest of their diets.

Can you share some pictures with me so I can see what you are feeding?

Not everyone treats their chickens like some of us do! We call our kids, "Little ppl in feathered suits!"
