Got some updates here and they are STRANGE.
Recap: my Ameraucana Penny laid an egg on Tuesday that was covered in goo. It was not a broken egg from another hen and I really have no explanation for it.
Today Penny laid another egg. I've been watching her since Tuesday and I don't think she has laid since then. It was really hard to tell the last couple days because I also have an Easter Egger that lays light blue eggs but Pennys seem to be a little larger so she provided one today. I found the egg around noon in one of the nesting boxes. it had been broken. I hope no one ate any of it but that is the least of my worries right now. When I scooped up all of the broken egg the yolk of the egg appears VERY different. Pics attached. Any idea what the heck this is? It seems like the egg white was there but this is a yolk from a horror movie? Some green weird part in there and solid yolk. I don't have roosters not a fertilized egg
. We don't use our eggs daily so I did crack open the one that had the goo all over it on Tuesday and it was a perfectly normal egg.
Now for Pennys behavior : this morning she couldn't wait to get out of the coop. Went straight to the feeder and I've been watching her throughout the day and she's been pretty active. Just her normal self. Now I will say yesterday afternoon on my last visit with them before I tuck them into bed she did seem a little off, and by a little off I mean she was mostly just drinking water and then would come stand next to me a couple times with one eye open and puffed. She would do the one eye open puffed-up stance for a few minutes and then go mosey around with the other hens and come back and do it again. When I checked on them one more time before bed she was on her roost ready to sleep. The only thing I could think of was Colorado got a crazy amount of snow on Tuesday night it was over a foot of snow and I thought maybe she just didn't feel right over the weather or just needed some rest?
Thanks!
