I don’t know where this post fits so I am just going to put it here but my Iso red hen just started laying today!! Which is kinda crazy because her boyfriend just left lol but she laid one of those “soft” eggs and by the time I came out to see she ate it lol and was running around with the soft shell in her mouth. Now technically I suppose it could belong to the other hen I just got that is not far behind her in age but I don’t think that’s the case. This is the egg in question and I know for the first try it might not come out right and I think that’s the case for this egg but let me know what you think, it was a normal egg besides the shell it is so so so thin. I also am just a bit on edge because she has poopy butt 🙄

It can be common for a new layer to have a soft shelled egg. Do you have her on layer feed and have crushed oyster shell available? You can alao give them a human calcium citrate tablet with vitamin D 3 for a couple of days to get some quick calcium into her. That helps the muscle contractions pass the egg, since soft eggs can become stuck.

Yes but i’m planning on switching all the feed to a mix of crumble cracked corn and oyster shell. She currently is on the same medicated starter feed she’s been on since a chick and that was the plan for until she started laying which is today lol, she’s acting a little weird though now that i’ve been watching her for the past hour.. Does this look like she’s adjusting her crop or should I be more concerned? I wish I could just post the video but I can’t so here’s screenshots of it happening

How do you give the chicken a calcium tablet?
