Possible that part of the oviduct (ETA: piece of the follicle) got included in the egg when that one was made inside the chicken. I had one do that a time or two, but not so much red stuff/blood in mine. Other than that, no idea. Good news though, if it is a partially included oviduct (ETA: I meant follicle, specifically), then the issue is usually a one-off and is generally corrected for the next egg. I'd crack all your eggs carefully for the next few weeks and see if you get a repeat. If no repeat, I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes there are glitches when birds start back to laying after a break.

Thanks so much for this reply, I haven't seen any others like this since but will keep an eye out

Do you still have that?

The tan lump, can you take that out and cut it open, is it semi-solid with layers in it?

It looks like there's lash material along with a piece of follicle along with some shell membrane.

If that's Lash material, then the hen has Salpingitis which is inflammation of the Oviduct. You can try treating with an antibiotic like Amoxicillin to see if that helps.

x2 what Wyorp Rock said. I thought the bit circled in this picture was a straight up egg yolk, but if it's lash egg material, that changes things.

I don't still have it but I did cut that lump and it was soft. There was no smell at all, which I would have expected from lash material. All if the chickens are eating, drinking and behaving normally. I don't even know which one laid this. I will keep a close eye and look for any other symptoms. Thank you for your reply.

Lash material may not smell, but that was a lump, so I agree with you, I'd keep watch on the girls to see if anyone shows other symptoms.

It could be just a one time thing or won't show up for a good while longer.
