Hey everybody!

Okay, so I've been a little concerned about our little buff orp, who's only about 1 1/2 yrs old, usually lays like a champ... Found an "shell-less" egg in the nesting box, pretty sure it was hers a week and half ago, then no eggs from her for almost a week... Then then I got a normal one, skipped a day, another normal egg, skipped a day, then I checked the nesting box @ 12:30 today, nothing... I come home (@ 7:30pm) to what appears to be a broken egg in the nesting box, with a shell to the side that's all rolled up and dried....pretty sure nobody pecked it, as the egg contents still seem to be in the nesting box.... We offer oyster shells free choice and pretty good quality layer food....is there any possibility there is a reason why my hen wouldn't be absorbing CA? Does she need to go to the vet?

I think it's Vitamin D that's needed to absorb calcium.
If she's not getting enough regular feed because of foraging or other foods, with the vits and mins they need, that might be a reason.

She might be getting ready to molt at 18 months old, eggs can get wonky before and after a molt.

Oops, just saw the reply- so maybe she's getting ready to molt... Two of the others are molting right now... They don't free range/forage so much that she's not around the chicken food enough to get her fill of it (or at least I don't think)...

She's acting totally fine otherwise... My little golden retriever in chicken form! :D
Guess I'll just keep an eye on her...

Thanks so much for the reply!!

I wondered.

If the others are molting(I assume same age) then there's your answer(probably).
