Weird looking marans egg

Hello,

I have just collected the eggs and saw this one which is very strange looking. I am used to having slightly discolored eggs, or spotty ones sometimes but never one like this. Is it normal ? Does the discoloration mean the chicken is lacking something ? It is from my marans chicken so it's meant to be dark brown.

Is she a new layer?

Has there been some episode of stress affecting your birds? A predator scare or a bad storm with lots of lightning and thunder giving them a fright?

Any hen can have an occasional glitch with new layers or hens at the beginning or end of a molt cycle being the glitchiest.

Some will lay that kind of egg all their lives. I've got a French Cuckoo Marans who regularly lays speckled eggs and some Orpington x Wyandotte girls who regularly lay pink eggs with that sort of mottling.

If you don't see another it was just a glitch in the processing equipment. If you see them regularly then it's that hen's version of normal and enjoy the conversation piece eggs (I'd be tempted to blow it out and save the shell).

yes it is pretty, and no she's been laying for a few months, fist time it's ever looked like that !

Thanks for your reply ! Ok great, I'll keep an eye out, nothing out of the ordinary has happened recently, hopefully just a glitch, she seems fine and happy, and good idea about blowing oit the shell, I might just do that

Yep. If it doesn't repeat then it's just one of those weird things that happen with eggs.
