This weird lump recently came up on my chickens front leg. I don't know the chickens breed or age and it doesn't seem to be hurting her at all. She weighs roughly 4 pounds and her egg production and eating habits haven't changed. I just noticed it and haven't administered any treatments. It has not spread to any of my other chickens. If possible I want to treat completely by myself. I use hay for all bedding. Attached us a picture of lump.

It is hard to discern anything about the foot. Can you take another picture of just the foot and leg? It has the look of a tumor. Have there been any scaly leg mites? Welcome to BYC.

I'm new to raising chickens so I'm not sure about the mites. Attached are more pictures.

Is it attached to the thigh or the knee? I would be surprised if that wasn’t a tumor. How old is she? Was she vaccinated for Mareks? Her breed is unclear, although she looks like she has some golden laced something in her. If a vet is not a possibility, I would watch her to see if the tumor keeps growing and causes any problems getting around. It may become necessary to put her down if it is cancer. I would then contact your state vet to get a necropsy/autopsy to get a diagnosis. There are different types of tumors in chickens, and two types are caused by Mareks disease and leukosis viruses.

The lump is on her thigh. I got her from an auction sale so we don't know much about her and shes probably not vaccines. Shes still been laying eggs pretty regularly. The vet really isn't a possibility for my financial situation right now. Is there anything at all that you know of that I can do to help her if it is a tumor?

How large is the base of the tumor where it connects to the thigh? Is it narrow or thick? Did it grow fast or slow? I wish we could know if it is benign or malignant. There might be a way to tie it off if the base is very narrow, but if it is cancer, that probably would not work or be successful. Do you have a state poultry college where you could email these pictures? In some states that can be a good way to get a diagnosis.

The base is narrower and it grew in very fast. We dont have a school dedicated to poultry but several colleges near me offer poultry science as either a major or a minor.
