On a more serious note, an overfed fish can also die from over-eating because their intestines burst.

My overzealous cousin lost a lot of fish to overfeeding... she was little and just thought that the fish were always hungry

Honestly? I really don't know. I do know that it happens a lot to goldfish, especially ones that are fed too much by their owners. Perhaps it has something to do with them being so small? There's not much distance between their stomachs and heads if you think about it...​
