Weird Question

My aunt use to have an outhouse at the edge of the chicken pen so every time anyone pooped in there the chickens would eagerly gather under you for their " special treat"
She would gather the eggs and eat them ,now that is recycleing. I asked her if she had heard of disease. She didn't see a problem with it seeing that chickens eat poop anyway,

no body eats anyones poo here, but my dog does like to lick the chicks bottoms. I guess i'll never have to worry about sticky butt with my dog around.

Fivebigreds, that's fowl!!! (Pun completely intended!!)

My dog loves chick poo too but my vet says it's a no no because of the different paracites that can harm the dog. My dog loves cat poo tooooooo.

As nasty as it seems to us, poo eating is obviously very common in the animal world and for good reason.

Carnivore poo (ie, dogs/cats) is full of protein - dogs and cats have very inefficient digestive systems so a lot of what they eat goes right on through. Also, a lot of dog foods are corn based, and corn is not digested all that well either, so dog poo is rich in protein and also may have a lot of partially digested corn in it also. Gross to us, but a delicious buffet to chickens.

We all know about the bad parasites and bacteria that can be present in poop, but did you also think that poo is very high in PRO-biotics too? Many young animals eat the adult poop as a source of positive bacteria to colonize the gut and make digestion more efficient, so eating healthy poo (not loaded with parasites) can be good for the chicken's digestive health.

Herbivore poo is extremely rich in partially digested grasses and other plant materials. As we all know, chickens have to grind up food in a sac full of rocks before digesting it - eating cow or horse poo is just a short cut for them.

Animals eating poo is the natural world's ultimate recycling. And when you get the circle of poop eating - ie dog eats chicken, chicken eats dog - that's recycling at it's finest. LOL

Scatology lesson over for today....now back to your regularly scheduled programming....

Wow... I guess that's one way to keep the yard clean! And I realize it's part of the Great Circle.. but I'm thinking the eggs might taste a bit off to me for awhile...

My dogs are in the frontyard.. my chickens are in the backyard.. no poo eating here.

Arlee- terrific info.

My vet tells me not to let my dog eat chick poo because of the paracites that the chick have it can hurt the dog.

If I could post this anonymously I would have,
but one of my sweet young girls runs to my dog when they see her about to do her business and start eating before it can hit the ground!
YELCH!
