Congrats! What an adorable picture.

Thanks! The chick was SO funny trying to dive back under Lisa Marie. Could not get there fast enough. There is another chick as of this morning. I cannot wait to get home this evening to see how many have hatched!
My nieces are so upset that they are going to stay with their great-aunt for two days and will miss the others being hatched but when they come back Thursday evening, the chicks will be able to be held, hopefully (which is what they wanted to do as soon as the first appeared).

KrisRenee,

I was reading this post and see you are from Bastrop County. 2 of my family lines comes from that area - surnames: French, Berry, McMahon.

Chicabee19,

I am not from here - I just live here, although if it has to be TX, then Bastrop County is where I want to be as we have TREES! I moved to TX in 2005 & am waiting for my mother to retire so that we can head your way.

I HATE this heat and cannot wait to escape. One sister & family live in OR and my bro-in-law & other nieces live in WA. We'll be heading to south-central WA in about two years.

Here are the two chicks with Lisa Marie and her remaining 10 eggs. At what point should I be worried about the other eggs hatching?

KrisRenee, did all the eggs go under the hen at the same time? If so, they should've all hatched around the same time. If some are delayed and the hen leaves the nest then they will die.

Will mama let you candle them?

To keep mama on the nest you have to take the chicks and put them in a brooder box for a couple of days. If she isn't worrying about feeding active chicks then she's more likely to stay on the nest.

wegotchickens, they are ALL in a kind of brooder box, including Lisa Marie. She is still laying on the eggs and the chicks have their food & water right there. They climb under her with the eggs and on top of LM, too. One is kind of shy and the other comes running out whenever he/she hears my voice.

It was really funny last night ... I was out there talking to Lisa Marie & the babies and I asked LM if she had shown those darlings how to eat & drink. She stood up, looked right at me, walked to the feeder, picked up some of it & dropped it on the shavings. She looked at me again, walked directly to the waterer, clucked to the chicks who came running over there and then went & climbed back on the eggs, pulling every single one under her. Then stared at me!

My mother was laughing so hard she was crying! LM has never - not one time - raised up off those eggs while I have been out there. Reckon she was telling me that she can raise her own children, thank you very much? My mother now swears that she knows exactly what I am saying - too funny.

Oh! MOST of the eggs went under at the same time - 3 went almost a day later. I am going to wait until tomorrow to candle. Headed out there now to see what's going on.

You've spent a lot of time with that little lady, so it wouldn't surprise if she understood the gist of what you meant. And she was definitely telling you she knows the drill. That is just too funny!!!

If she's that smart and still on those eggs then I'll bet there's someone in there that hasn't hatched yet. I think you're right to give them a little more time.

ok ... so I could not wait ... I candled and ended up throwing four out. I am thinking they were not fertile as they were all liquid still. My friend said she was not sure on all of them but thought the majority should be fertile. The others look good but we'll have to see what happens.

Lisa Marie was very excited to get the other eggs back and could not scoop them under her fast enough.
