Weird ? - what would make a package of sausage blow up?

Quote:
it's not proper frugal behavior to eat a spoiling $5 worth of sausage and then have to pay a $500 emergency room bill.
yep, be frugal, toss the meat.

and any bacteria that thrives in the freezer is one I SURELY want no part of... YIKES!

Throw it out! I would not take chances either.

Water and meat products would not expand that much either, let alone blow up. Something is going on in there that multiply so fast that it exploded before it went solid frozen.

Yep, I agree with the others, throw it out. And wrap it in paper so hubby don't think it is "precious meat".

Ok no one else suggested it so I will.......Eat it before it gets bigger.

Just Kidding throw it in a medical waste burner ...anything growing in fridged temps can't be good

found this in a search online:
Salmonella and other types of bacteria such as E. coli are not killed by freezing. Rather, the cells' metabolisms slow down and they stop dividing. However, when rewarmed, the cells will begin dividing again. The only way to kill salmonella and E. coli is by heating the cells to a temperature which causes them to lyse, or break open. Freezing does not necessarily lyse cells; some cells may die, but many will survive. Microbiologists often freeze colonies of bacteria for later use.

and also some references indicated that those bacteria that survive freezing are naturally cold-hardy and would be more resistant to killing by freezing - thereby selecting for ever more freeze-resistant bacteria.

while I found references for cold-loving bacteria I didn't find any references for cold-loving food-borne illness type bacteria.

anyway whatever's in your freezer seems like a Really Bad Thing to have in your kitchen and near other food.

Okay, I'll toss it.

Or maybe I'll keep it for the next time the stepdaughters come over expecting a meal.
