I wish I could attach a sound file here so you guys could hear the way my roos crow. This is the first flock of Buff Orpingtons I have had, but I have in the past raised other breeds, RIR, Leghorn, BR, EE's, and mixed breeds. They have none of them sounded so weird as these guys. It's sorta "er-er-er -er-ERRRR" really hoarse and not like any crowing I have heard before. All 4 of my Buffs sound this way. (The Blue doesn't crow, the other guys won't let him.)
Is this a trait of their breed or are they retarded? They seem normal in everything else. Well, except for the one who insists on sleeping on top of the coop instead of inside, even if it's raining. That one will nap inside during the day but will NOT go inside at night. My husband named him Sniper and says he is guarding the henhouse all night.

how old are they, sometimes it takes them a little while to figure it out. We had one cuckoo maran that sounded like chewbacca for some time.

They're 10 months old and have been crowing for at least 6 months or more. They crow a LOT, I would think with all that practice they would have it down by now,

Some roos just have funnier crows than others, I'm afraid! Especially young roosters just beginning to crow--they have the funniest ones of all. Sounds like you're just stuck with hilarious crowing, though!

That's why I love the funny crowers--it's impossible not to smile at the terrible noises that come out of them! My Japanese bantam roo I had for eleven years had the most high-pitched, non-manly crow ever and it made me laugh so much. My serama roo's crow is fairly standard, but my spangled OEGB roo has a bit of a funny little crow! Enjoy their terrible music.
