Hello,
My name is Kay and I am addicted to chickens. I have raised chickens off and on for the past 12 years. My daughter has started to call me the crazy chicken lady.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No, I got my first batch of chickens 12 years ago. I started with Rhode Island Reds (which I found very aggressive), Red Sex Links, and a couple of Barred Rocks.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 26 chickens. At least 12 of those will be culled in a few weeks for meat
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have:
2 4-5 week old Barred Rocks (that are starting to look like roos) named Batman and Robin
2 6 week old Buff Orpingtons (I think they were close to 2 weeks old when I bought them at the store, one looks to be a pullet and one a cockrel) named Raven and Sunny (Sunflower) and Suzie (Black Eyed Susan)
2 6 week old Black Austrlorps (one looks to be a pullet and one a cockrel) named Raven and Scratch
2 4-5 week old Easter Eggers (one looks to be a pullet and one a cockrel) named Adeline and Caroline now Cary (think Cary Ewles) since it appears to be male)
6 4 week old Cornish Xs unnamed
2 Red Rangers (3-4 weeks old) named Ruddy and Ranger (I really shouldn't have named these though as they will most likely be culled)
1 Lavender Orpington (3 weeks old) named Dilly
1 Random Bantam chick 3 weeks old named Rosie, probably an OEG Bantam
1 4 day old Wyandotte that was sold as a blue, but I am suspecting it's a Golden Laced) named Chitton (my son named him)
3 Silkies (2 buff/splashed 3 weeks old named Dandelion and Daisy, and 1 blue 4 days old named Violet)
4 Easter Eggers 4 days old although I suspect a couple may possibly be Black Asian since they were in the same container together and their markings aren't as chipmunky.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Fresh eggs
I find chickens very calming to watch and listen too
I love finding new varieties. I really want to add some D'uccle, Blue Brasse, and some other rare breeds to my flock. I would like to try my hand at raising them. A few years ago we had a great Bantam hen who was broody and a good mother, we let her free range but after a couple of years a dog got her.
This time around I planned to do more of a contained free range.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Crocheting
Movies
Gardening (not because I love it)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 5 children and a husband. I homeschool 3 (soon to be 2) of my children. The rest have graduated (or will be graduating soon) I have a bird (cinnamon cheeked green conure) named Tango, a Siamese cat named Groot and 2 dogs (mutts - mix of Beagle, Basset hound and Border Collie) Pepper & Coffee. I am currently coordinator (and have been for the past 3 years) of our local Community Bible Study, but will be stepping down next month.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC a few years ago just by googling things about chickens but never joined. I am always trying to learn more. Now that I'm back in the chicken business and BYC is chock full of information and experience, I think it's a good fit and I love the community which I hope to be a part of.
